Old Ottawa East is a neighbourhood south of downtown and Sandy Hill and north of Old Ottawa South. Homes here are mostly single family residences though recent infill activity has made modern semi-detached and townhouses more common. Main Street runs through the centre of the neighbourhood and is home to the Cuban embassy, Immaculata High School and Saint Paul University. A strong sense of community is felt in Old Ottawa East and since the area is predominantly occupied by families, many of the area’s amenities are geared towards children. The Children’s Garden for instance, is Ottawa’s first dedicated children’s garden. Organic food-growing beds, a woodland garden and a seating area are fenced around by a colourful picket fence painted by Lady Evelyn kids.
